Review Sought of British Nuclear Weapons Policy

Last Friday the Liberal Democrats called for the government to reconsider the Trident submarine-based nuclear deterrent in an upcoming military policy review. Three years ago Parliament agreed to a $32.3 billion plan to modernise the Trident system in an effort to close the $55 billion defence spending gap that is projected over the next decade. According to GSN, Labour and the Conservative Party wish to prevent the Trident modernisation plan from being reviewed, whereas the Liberal Democrats defence spokesman, Nick Harvey, has argued that, “Omitting the single largest procurement project from the strategic defence review makes a complete mockery of the whole exercise.” Harvey also adds that Trident modernisation could cost the UK $152 billion over the next five decades.
