Syria Permits IAEA Access to Nuclear Reactor

Syria has allowed the IAEA access to one of its nuclear research reactors in Damascus as part of the UN watchdog’s investigation into illicit nuclear activities, according to Reuters. The Middle Eastern country, however, is still refusing to allow access to the remains of the facility at Dair Alzour, which was bombed by Israel in 2007, despite IAEA requests. Syria denies that this site was being used for nuclear purposes but the US claims that it housed a North Korean built reactor that was designed to produce weapons grade material. The IAEA will be releasing another report on Syria’s nuclear activity in late May.
